Sausage Broccoli Chowder

I made this the other night and have been asked by numerous people to share the recipe.  So here it is:

Ingredients
  • 1 pound bulk Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 9 ounces cheese tortellini, cooked and drained
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 8 cups light cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese
Directions
  1. In a skillet, cook and crumble sausage until no longer pink. Remove to paper towels to drain; set aside. In the same skillet, saute onion, garlic and mushrooms in butter until tender; set aside.
  2. In a Dutch oven, cook the broccoli and carrots in chicken broth until tender. Stir in sausage and the mushroom mixture. Add soup, tortellini, pepper, basil and thyme; heat through. Stir in cream and Romano cheese; heat through.

My wife and I went here last Saturday for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. After reading many of the reviews on here, I was beginning to second guess my choice, but I am glad I didn’t listen to many on here. Our experience here was fabulous! The service couldn’t have be…en better, and the food was great. I made reservations and when we arrived we were taken immediately to a very nice, quiet, secluded room with only two other couples. The maitre de was quick in wishing us a Happy Anniversary, which both surprised and pleased my wife. Our server came to our table immediately and, since this was our first time, explained the whole ordering process. We ordered the Fondue for Two with the New World Cheese, Seafood Entrée Platter, and Flaming Turtle for desert. My wife ordered the “wine flight”, which pairs a glass of selected wine with each course, and I got a glass of the “house specialty” wine. Scallops are simmered in butter with asparagus and mushrooms then served with seashell pasta in a rich cream sauce.

Here is the recipe I used to base what I made for dinner… Don’t know if I can call what I made Scallops Mascarpone, because I didn’t have any Mascarpone cheese and was to lazy to go to the store and look for some. I made tons of substitutions… brocolli instead of asparagus, canned mushrooms, dried parsley, cream cheese instead of Mascarpone… It was still delicious!
