If U.S. Northern Command needs troops to respond to a national emergency, commanders now have 4,000 soldiers on alert to answer the call.

Northern Command at Peterson Air Force Base, which was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to coordinate the military response to everything from the aftermath of hurricanes to nuclear fallout, has relied primarily on part-time National Guard troops.

You know NORTHCOM is just a few miles away and I am not one to question the decisions of our great leaders, but…

I was all for the creation of NORTHCOMM when it was first created in 2002 to “protect the United States homeland and support local, state, and federal authorities.”

But since hurricane Katrina it seems that NORTHCOM has gotten more and more into the business of protecting us from “acts of God”, and I don’t see how that is a role of the military. Now the folks up the road have an entire active duty Army brigade, 4,000 soldiers, assigned to help with disaster relief, I don’t get it… This job has always been held by the National guard, is the guard now unable to do these duties? What happened to FEMA, isn’t this their job as well?

The support that USNORTHCOM provides to civil authorities is limited by the Posse Comitatus Act which limits the role of the U.S. military in civil law enforcement, how can this brigade accomplish this role without violating this act (FYI- National guard troops do not fall under the Posse Comitatus Act)?

Maybe I am reading too much into this. But with our troops already spread thin and with the huge amount of money we are spending supporting current operations already in place, do we really need this?

I’d love to hear what you think. You can read the Gazette article here then feel free to comment.
