The Boy Scout Who (Almost) Built a Nuclear Reactor

For your daily “why we are all going to die” news, we have this story from the ’90s, in which a young boy, attempting to earn a Boy Scout badge, becomes an irradiated, tentacled monster.  The last part is false, but if this kid isn’t a supervillain by now, we’ve all been lied to.

How did he manage to do this, you ask?  With the help of authorities, of course.  That’s right: in order to figure out how to successfully concoct his maniacal plans, this kid simply  called up experts on the issues and asked for help with “a report.”

The article is fascinating.  For relatively cheap, this guy acquired enough smoke detectors and batteries to extract irradiated materials strong enough to set off his Geiger counter from five houses away.  I was planning on sleeping tonight.

Special badge for Scouts who earn Eagle in 2012

Know a Scout seeking a little extra motivation to finish his Eagle requirements next year? I’ve got it.

To celebrate the centennial of Scouting’s top honor, all recipients of the Eagle Scout Award in the year 2012 will be eligible to wear a special version of the red, white, and blue badge, seen here.

Next year will mark 100 years since Arthur Rose Eldred became the BSA’s first Eagle. Since that date — Aug. 21, 1912 — more than 2 million outstanding young men have earned the award.

The special-edition patch, available at local Scout Shops after the first of the year, will help make an already-special honor even more noteworthy.

Why the special patch? I’m told that after the overwhelming popularity of the 100th Anniversary of Scouting rank badges, Boy Scouts of America officials said it made sense to find a similarly unique way to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Eagle Scouts.

A cool, new patch that will motivate Scouts? You won’t hear any complaints from me — or your guys!

New Guide to Advancement

Guide to Advancement The 2011 Guide to Advancement is ready. It has a few significant changes and gives individual units more room to define their own expectations:

  • Active Participation requirements updated. Units can set their own ‘active’ expectations.
  • Position of Responsibility requirements updated. Units can set expectations to define the fulfillment of the position.
  • Merit badge section revampd.
  • Info about wearing uniform to Board of Review clarified – uniforms can not be mandatory.
  • Changes in the Eagle Scout Service Project requirement.
  • Awards and recognitions moved to a separate Guide to Awards and Insignia.

Councils may choose to make a transition over the next few months from the former advancement publication to the new Guide to Advancement. After January 1, however, the new guide must be consulted for all advancement procedures.

It would be a good idea to get this new document into the hands of your unit committee chair, advancement chair, and scoutmaster/advisor/cubmaster as soon as you can.
